Attorney and General Counsel, South Carolina Department of Agriculture
Alden joined the South Carolina Department of Agriculture as General Counsel in 2018 and provides legal advice and counsel to the Commissioner, Assistant Commissioners, and other agency officials on a broad range of legal issues regarding agency policies and operations, including but not limited to proper interpretation and application of statutes and regulations; review and development of forms, contracts, releases, leases and other documents on matters of personnel, real estate, zoning, employment, human relations, legal transactions, ethics, etc.; and compliance with the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).
Prior to joining the agency, Alden practiced at a mid-size Columbia, SC firm where she served at outside legal counsel for the agency, along with representing clients in real estate development, commercial transactions, and general litigation.
A cum laude graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Law, Alden was a CALI Award Recipient and was frequently on the Dean’s List. Alden was inducted into Phi Delta Phi International Legal Honor Society and served as research editor for the Real Property, Trust and Estate Law Journal.
Prior to law school, Alden earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of South Carolina, graduating magna cum laude with a double major in political science and experimental psychology. She earned Dean’s List honors every semester and was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society.
A native of Spartanburg, Alden is active in the Columbia, SC community where she volunteers with local charitable organizations. Before she attended law school, Alden logged more than 300 total hours as an AmeriCorps volunteer.
